Charming

Charming by Krystal Wade Published by: Curiosity Quills Press Publication date: October 6th 2014 Genres: Thriller, Young Adult Synopsis: They say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, and that’s great . . . as long as you don’t die. Sixteen-year-old Haley Tremaine had it all: top-notch school, fantastic family, and a bright future, but all of that changed when an accident tore her family apart. Now, an alcoholic father, a bitter younger sister, and a cold headstone bearing her mother’s name are all she has left. Chris Charming has it all: a powerful CEO for a father, a prestigious school, and a fortune at his fingertips, but none of that matters when he lands a reputation as a troublemaker. Struggling to follow in his father’s footsteps, he reaches out to the one person he believes truly sees him, the one person he wants: Haley. Little do they know someone’s determined to bring the two together, even if it means murder. Goodreads-button.pngamazon_buy_button_2BarnesNoble_button_thumbdivider4.png I quickly want to thank Xpresso Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of this book tour. I really enjoyed reading this and it was so much fun to dip into something different. I have to admit at first I thought that I might have bitten off more then I could chew just because this genre scares the bejeezes out of me. I am a big wimp with an over active imagination but I have to say that this book sucked in my right from the beginning and trust me that is a good thing.

This is a Cinderella retelling and I have to say I haven’t read alot of these retelling stories but I think I might have to check some more out after this.

I am a firm believer of what doesn’t kill you only makes you stronger and I really think this motto suits Haley. Haley has a terrible life and my heart breaks for any child or young adult that goes through this. Her father is an alcoholic who abuses his daughters and I have to say that this always turns my stomach. I really wanted to reach into the book and kill the father. How can a parent do that to his own child?

Haley is alone in this world even though she has a few friends. Her sister hates her (and she makes it now to Haley) and her mother is dead. You could almost see that she thought that was her life and that she had no chance in hell to got out of this situation. This is where I wanted to tell Haley that it will only get better.

Enter Chris who is sort of like Haley. He is your typical guy who has it all but when a bad rumor begins to circulate about him that isn’t true he begins to rethink everything he has ever known. I loved how it wasn’t thrown at you all at once but that it built. It was a nice pace like a roller coaster going up the hill and then bam everything happened at once and it was really good. It gave you time to get to know Haley.

I was hooked from the very beginning and literally had a hard time putting it down. There is so much I can say about this book but I won’t just that you need to get this book to read and then you will see what I am talking about.

Krystal Wade is happily married to the love of her life (don’t gag) and raising
three beautiful children in the gorgeous state of Virginia. They live just outside
Washington, D.C., and every day she wakes up to find herself stuck in traffic trying
to get there.
The horrid commute gives Krystal plenty of time to zone out and think about her
characters in full, brilliant details (she’s a safe driver; don’t worry). Stories
give her a way to forget about the sometimes smelly strangers sitting next to her on
the fifty mile trek into town (she picks up hitchhikers every day. True story. Check
out www.slug-lines.com if you don’t believe us).

Krystal has been a part of organized hitchhiking for nearly fifteen years, but
that’s just one small aspect of her oh-so-large life. When she’s not working,
commuting, or chasing after her three children (four if you count the man), you can
usually find Krystal outside talking to her chickens like they’re the cutest things
in the world (they are), or training her amazing dogs how to herd said chickens
(which they love), or curled up on the sofa with a good book (why can’t that be 100%
of the time?).

Fredonia, the tiny jewel of a country in the Alps, for ten days ‘tops’ to
impersonate her.

Say what? How the heck is that going to happen?

In the mother of all makeovers, Elizabeth’s people teach Lucy how to dress, walk,
talk, eat, be coiffed and even get naked like a European Lady.

The goal?

To keep Crown Prince Cristoph Timmel interested in Elizabeth until she finishes her
unexpected, pressing personal business in the States.

But fate intervenes… Lucy meets and is wildly attracted to sexy, bad-boy Nick on the
oh-so-long flights to Fredonia. Unfortunately for Lucy—Nick and Elizabeth have a hot

her dream guy? Or tell the truth and return to poverty and oblivion?

Excerpt:

I glance in, but the box is dark inside all of the tissue paper. My hands retrieve the first item. “Buckeyes!” I exclaim.

“I can see why she’s your best friend.” Dean leans on one elbow, watching me explore the contents one by one.

I reach in, continuing to pull out items—a black hair scarf with cherries, a pair of earrings from one of my favorite local jewelry designers in Cincinnati, Abbi Glines’s newest steamy romance. My cheeks go hot as Dean sees the cover, lifting his eyebrows.

“Well, I think that’s it,” I say, lifting the box, the sound of something shifting inside catching my attention. “Oh, there’s something else.”
I reach in, and as I do, I can feel Dean’s eyes locked on me. I feel something long and cool slip into my hand. Locking my fingers around it, I let the box fall away. Instantly, I see Dean straighten up, a half-cocked grin on his face.

Much to my horror, I look down to see a pink rubber penis-shaped device in my hand. I freeze, but my cheeks are on fire. All I can think about is the different ways I am going to torture Monica before I kill her.

“I can explain,” I begin. I’ll tell him she’s crazy—like actually certifiable.

He’s still grinning at me as he gives me a slight nod. He closes the gap between us even more.

“You know, I can help with that,” he offers, and I can’t help but wonder if he’s serious, or perhaps maybe I’m wishing.

“You think I’m that easy?” I hit the ball squarely back to him. I consider licking my lips, but worry that may be over the top. I’m looking directly at him, and damn, he’s incredible.

“A guy can hope.” He pauses, playfully lifting an eyebrow. “Can’t he?”
I grin. In fact, I can’t do anything but grin. He moves closer, and I glance down, realizing I’m still holding the device. My breath hitches, but he still moves closer. He’s facing me, never moving those gorgeous blue eyes away from me. He slides his arm around my waist, and as he presses himself against me, I’m sure I can feel an erection. This surprises me, and my hand releases the dildo, which falls to the floor with a thud.

“What’s wrong? Can’t contain your excitement around me?” he whispers, his breath warm on my neck, just below my ear.
My mouth is watering, my heartbeat quickens, and my head is now spinning. I pull back, the distance giving me a slight bit of clarity. The idea of this kind of pleasure is tempting. The bulge in his jeans tells me he is interested.

In an attempt to casually conceal the pink rubber shaft, I use the toe of my platform sandals to kick it under a nearby chair. Dean cocks a brow, his face shifts, and he laughs softly.

“What?” I shrug innocently.

“Did you just kick a dick under a chair?” He’s still laughing.

“Watch it, or I might make a habit of it.”

“Ouch,” he hisses, then winces, grabbing himself as if he were imagining the attack.

My eyes dart past his shoulder, where Storm is coming up the stairs. She has on her headphones, staring at the face of her phone. I nod my head at Dean, indicating we’re no longer alone. I shift, moving to walk past him. He grabs my hip, pulling me into his grasp.

“We’ll continue this later,” he promises. He takes my hand and leads me past Storm and out of the bus without a word. I wonder if she can tell what had been transpiring from the look on my face.

As we move around the side of the bus, I feel his hand shift to the small of my back. It’s like he knows all the places to touch me to drive me absolutely insane.

(Excerpt 7: Addison tells Ethan that she had a miscarriage during her marriage.)

…“That little stick changes your life, doesn’t it?” Ethan asked, thinking of the moment when his sons were born. The overwhelming love, mixed with outright terror knowing he was responsible for two helpless human beings. After all the disappointments and the losses, to finally hold his precious boys had been nothing short of miraculous.

“It certainly changed mine,” Addison said. “Changed my marriage, too. Looking back, I think that might have been the beginning of the end. Something died between Merrick and me, and we never recovered.”

“No wonder. To suggest something so—” He took a deep breath. “I can’t imagine a world without my boys.”

“That’s what makes you a good man.”

“It’s what makes me a father.”

A dry chuckle escaped. “Ironically, Merrick is going to be a father again, after all. America’s sweetheart is pregnant.”

“What?”

“Angela told me on the set. Gleefully informed me she was two months pregnant and that Merrick was thrilled. He’d already gone out and started buying baby things.”

A key slid into the slot, unlocking another secret in Addison’s life. “Let me guess, that’s when you punched her.”

“Bingo,” Addison said. “All I could hear in my head was Merrick telling me to take care of the situation with my baby when he was doing cartwheels over Angela’s baby. Before I knew it, my arm was swinging.”

“I hope it hurt.”

“Sure did. Felt like I’d slammed my hand in a car door.”

He chuckled. “No, Angela.”

A wicked gleam entered Addison’s eyes. “She screamed. There was blood.” Her smile fell. “It was a great until Merrick called me into his office.”

“I’m sure it doesn’t make the humiliation you suffered go away, but honestly, I think you’re better off without him,” Ethan said. “You deserve so much more.”

“Do I? What if Merrick was right?” Addison asked. “Maybe he had an instinct about me. I’m probably the last person on earth who should be raising a child.”

“Why?”

“Too many reasons to count. I’m an emotional mess, for one. I don’t have a good role model to follow in the parenting arena, and I’ve never been around children. I’m just not good with anyone under the legal voting age.”

Where had Addison gotten the idea she couldn’t relate to children? Another mind game by her jerk of a husband?

“Tell that to my sons or the kids in the play,” Ethan said, folding his arms over his chest. “What about Aaron? He’d throw himself under a bus for you.”

A smile flickered across her face for a moment, but it disappeared almost as soon as it appeared. “So there’s one other option, which is that Merrick simply didn’t want a baby with me. I think I’d rather believe there was some maternal gene missing than accept I was foolish enough to believe he never loved me at all.”

“I thought we’d established your ex-husband is a prize pig.”

“We did?”

He brushed his fingers across her cheek. “I did anyway.”

Addison slipped her arms around his waist. She probably meant the gesture as a hug, but for him, the physical contact set off a chain reaction. Ethan stiffened, knowing he shouldn’t tempt fate or his own suppressed urges.

Oh, who am I kidding?

He didn’t have the strength to push her away.

“You want to know what I thought when I saw you holding Mary?” he asked, pulling her closer, giving in to the magnetic pull.

“I think it would be a bad idea if you told me,” Addison whispered back.

“I thought you were adorable,” Ethan said, ignoring the warning. “Flustered and scared and beautiful.”

Laughing, Addison buried her face in his chest. “I take it back. You’re not a good man. You’re dangerous. I thought we weren’t going to do this anymore.”

“I wasn’t.”

Then he lowered his head, capturing her lips.

1 Excerpt

I walked through the forest for what seemed to be hours enjoying the air, the fresh smell of the oak trees and the subtle sound of a creek nearby. I couldn’t help but wonder where I was headed. Maybe it had just been so long that I’d forgotten my destination. Where was I anyway?

Suddenly, my haze lifted and it was perfectly clear. Not more than a hundred feet in front of me I saw the unmistakable signs of the clearing ahead. Until that point, the path was barely three feet wide, not quite a trail. The trees became increasingly separated, which I hadn’t noticed until then. Up ahead, the trees were at least ten feet apart. I knew exactly what was beyond those trees. I needed to hurry, there was not enough time. There was never enough time!

As I ran to the clearing just ahead, my chest began to tighten. The heat on my skin and my shortness of breath had nothing to do with running. Deep in the pit of my stomach I knew that he was there. I knew that it was too late. The rush of adrenaline that flowed through my veins would not be enough to get me there in time.

Breaking through the trees and into the clearing, my fears were about to become my reality. I saw the unmistakable silhouette of the man that I had been looking for as long as I could remember. I ran with the hope that this time, I would catch him. This time, I would see his face and hear his voice. Finally, after all this time I caught up with him. I was about to touch his shoulder so that he would have to turn and face me, when everything went black. That’s when I heard beep, beep, beep! What was that annoying sound? Beep, beep, beep! Where was it coming from?

Beep, Beep, Beep!

The alarm clock. I hate alarm clocks. It was time to get up. I would rather have finished my dream. For six years later the dreams had remained unchanged. I always saw the man, who I knew that I loved, but I could never see his face. How could I love someone that I’ve never met? I could not deny what I felt when I saw him. The intense emotions ignited my need, my desire, and my completeness. If I could have just seen his face, maybe I could understand what I felt for him.

I was born and raised in Arizona and currently live in Phoenix. The heat can be difficult during the summer, but I try my best to spend most of my time during the hottest months indoors writing. I would love to travel someday and I hope that my writing will take me many places and hopefully not just in my head. My favorite vacation spot right now is San Diego California, but my dream places to visit are all overseas. Although, since I have only seen a fraction of the United States, I would love to travel the nation someday as well. First on my bucket list however is to explore the historical landmarks in Greece and Italy, and the castles all over Europe.

Up until recently, I have spent most of my adult life in college and working in sales and customer service type positions, while also raising my two incredible kids and serving three years in the Army National Guard. Recently I decided to pursue my dream of becoming a published author and I have begun to work on my writing full time. I am currently working on my first book in an eight book series which I have titled Reborn. Writing for me has always seemed like an unattainable dream, but now I realize that some dreams are only unattainable if we do not attempt to reach them.

I completed my Master of Science in Psychology in the spring of 2013 and I have also taken some graduate courses in Ancient and Classical history. I scheduled to begin my doctorate in Psychology (PsyD) in August 2014. I believe that the knowledge I have gathered from my life experiences as well as my education has assisted me in creating some interesting and complex characters. I hope you enjoy getting to know them as much as I have.
