Happy Canada Day

I just wanted to take a quick minute to wish my fellow Canadian bloggers a Happy Canada Day.

Canada Day is celebrated on July 1st. Canada Day is a statutory holiday throughout Canada.

In Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada Day is also known as Memorial Day.

Canada Day was established by statute in 1879, under the name Dominion Day. It is a commemoration of the day in 1867 that the first colonies of British North America entered Confederation as the Dominion of Canada.

Other names used in the past for Canada Day include: First of July, July the First, Confederation Day, and Dominion Day. On October 27, 1982, July 1st, then known as “Dominion Day”, was decreed by Parliament to be known as “Canada Day”.

Canada Day is celebrated with barbecues, parades, music, and of course fireworks in the evening.

For those that don’t live in Quebec and didn’t know this but in Quebec its also Moving Day. Moving Day on July 1st is a tradition, but not a legal requirement, in the province of Quebec.

  1. I hope you have a great day with your family today, Cindy!

  2. Happy Canada Day to you too! I’m going out with a friend and we’re going to be spending the day downtown Toronto with fireworks afterwards. 🙂

  3. I find the entire concept of Moving Day to be both amazing and highly comical. I cannot believe that an entire region agrees on 1 date for lease terms! And then of course, it is funny that everyone is looking to rent moving vans on the same day once a year. What a nightmare!

Enjoy your holiday – we’ll be spending our weekend watching fireworks too for the 4th.

  4. Happy Canada Day!

  5. Thanks everyone. I took Michael into the village and we took part in some of the activities. We will be heading down to see the fireworks soon.

  6. Happy Canada Day to you too! I hope you had a great day 🙂

  7. Thanks everyone it was a great day. Fireworks were absolutely amazing.

  8. We celebrated by attending the fireworks hosted by the Federation of Students at the University of Waterloo. We have a guest from overseas and this was her first Canadian Celebration. today I posted a summary of all the books I read in the past year that were written by Canadian authors.
